#DefendTheDeep
Moratorium on Deep Seabed Mining
Deep seabed mining threatens to devastate fragile deep-ocean ecosystems before science can even fully document them. SOA Nigeria is calling on the African Group at the International Seabed Authority to support a moratorium until the full environmental risks are understood and robust protections are in place.

Key Facts
- 1Deep seabed contains unique species found nowhere else on Earth
- 2Sediment plumes from mining can travel hundreds of kilometres
- 3Recovery timescales for deep-sea ecosystems span centuries
- 4Over 700 scientists have called for a moratorium on DSM
#OceanFriday
Ocean Friday
Every Friday, SOA Nigeria drives ocean conservation conversations across social media and communities in Nigeria. Ocean Friday is a weekly ritual of awareness, sharing ocean facts, spotlighting local heroes, and calling communities to action.

Key Facts
- 1Over 70% of Earth's oxygen comes from the ocean
- 2Nigeria has a 853 km coastline critical to millions of livelihoods
- 3Marine plastic pollution affects 700+ marine species globally
- 4Youth-led movements have achieved major ocean policy wins worldwide
#CleanCoastsNigeria
Nigerian Coastal Cleanup
From Bar Beach in Lagos to shorelines across Rivers State, SOA Nigeria organises regular coastal cleanup events to remove ocean-bound plastic and debris — while building a community of environmental stewards across Nigeria's coastline.

Key Facts
- 1Over 1,000 kg of waste removed from Nigerian coastlines so far
- 2Nigeria generates an estimated 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually
- 3Only ~15% of plastic waste in Nigeria is recycled
